We were approached by our clients to convert an inter-war home into an Allied Health (Psychology) clinic as favourable planning overlays supported a change of use to medical along major suburban roads.

Our initial review of their brief revealed that the original cellular plan would be an asset. Furthermore, the excellent condition of the existing building fabric and its richness of domestic detail was crucial to retain and leverage. Yet doing so, whilst meeting strict disability access requirements, would be a significant challenge.

The external works were limited to creating patient and clinician parking at the rear of the site and for accessible pathways to the main entrance, whilst using smart design thinking to keep 90% of the dwelling intact.

We wanted internal wayfinding to be simple yet distinct. This was done using colour along common circulation areas, contrasted with the rich existing detail within the individual consult rooms. Keeping and enhancing the rich details was vital in order support patient comfort, well-being, and care.

Colour, contrast and texture were used at the threshold / doorways to “hit reset” and transition from the common areas to the private treatment rooms. This approach was continued in ancillary spaces /wet areas. Accessibility has been fully achieved without being obvious internally and we count that as a double win.

The extensive use of natural tones is a subtle nod to nature. Over time the renewed landscaping at the front of the property will mature and further support overall patient experience.
